AERIE, which band title means nest of an eagle or large bird of prey, is a quintet lead and founded by saxophonist Ingo Hipp. The band was founded in 2013 and has since played over 50 concerts around Europe. The band is on tour to China presenting their album ‘hatch and host’, supported by Pro Helvetia Shanghai, Swiss Arts Council.

Although the instrumentation is that of a typical jazz quintet – saxophones, guitar, bass and drums, the group always searches for a fresh take on forms and structures as well as instrumental functionality.

Expect the unexpected at their shows: crazy flights, elegant sails, diligent hunting, always checking for limits. AERIE creates exciting modern jazz, connecting written material and improvisation with rock and jazz grooves. Structures are expanded and melt down, to be put together again in a fresh way.

Playing live, AERIE continues to catch audiences by constantly varying the shape of their music.

Ingo Hipp is a saxophonist and composer, from Freiburg, Germany. At the age of six, he began to play drums but switched to the saxophone two years later. He completed his Master Studies at the Lucerne (CH) Academy of Music in 2012 and founded AERIE, his international quintet, in 2013. He has also been performing and recording with Laurent Méteau’s Metabolism since 2011. He released his debut album as composer and saxophonist of AERIE in 2015 with Neuklang Records. Since 2015 Ingo is also a scholarship holder of the “Kunststiftung Baden Württemberg”.
