Gilles Jacot, born in 1990, lives and works in Zurich.
He works in the field of visual art via various media such as oil painting, sculpture, and installation. His apprenticeship as an architectural model builder taught him how to take distance from, observe and simultaneously focus on details. Through his artistic practice, he tries to take this view or feeling to a more conceptual and to a broader material level. Society, cultures and everyday objects create situations, legacies and heritages in which a lot of different fields of interest collide with each other. With his work, he tries to look at the questions or emotions raised by these situations: questions that are often overlooked or difficult to face with common media.
Gilles choses Shanghai as the destination for his residency, for it is a place where he could confront with the concept of “the extreme” in different ways. This has the interest of showing more directly the advantages and disadvantages of different processes that take place in a city. Through this residency, he will observe closely the questions that a city like Shanghai faces. His focus of creation shall be collage painting and drawings mixed with small objects.
