2021 — Music
Residency location: Hong Kong
Partner organization: TBD
Samuel Reinhard is a Swiss composer, musician and artist. Born in 1980 in Bern, Switzerland, he earned his MA in Contemporary Arts Practice (Music & Media Arts) from Bern University of the Arts in 2015. He now lives and works between Bern, New York and Los Angeles. He composes and releases recordings under various monikers, and maintains a practice of interdisciplinary collaborations and commissions. Aside from his personal practice, Reinhard produces records for an ever-expanding international roster of artists as well as writing music for films.
For his three-month residency, he’s planning on developing a series of new pieces based on improvisational, collaborative recording sessions with Hong Kong-based musicians. At the core of the project lies the idea of juxtaposing free improvisation with aleatoric and algorithmic compositional methods. His primary focus for this project is on creating conditions allowing for unpredictable musical outcomes, as the result of a dialogue between improvising musicians, himself as a composer and methodologies of generative music creation.
