“Tarik Hayward pursues his artistic research on materials produced by modernity… Between DIY and recovery business, between ruin and restoration, between alternative thinking and dystopian vision, Tarik Hayward creates works that claim as much from minimalist sculpture than from performance, while evoking Arte Povera or vernacular architecture by the nature of the materials used.” Nicole Schweizer, Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts, Lausanne
Tarik Hayward’s works got awarded the Swiss Art Awards in 2018; the Swiss Award for Performance, Kunstraum, Baden in 2012; the Irène Reymond Award in 2014; and the Accrochage Vaud Award in 2016. Latest shows include Resolutions: Zero. Hopes: Zero. at the Centre Culturel Suisse Paris and Indian Ink, Oraibi books, Geneva, 2018; Neutral Density at the Musée cantonal des beaux-arts, Lausanne, 2017; Birken at Sonnenstube, Lugano, 2016; and L’hospice des mille cuisses at the CAN, Neuchâtel and Gothique tardif at Art Môtiers, Môtiers, 2015.
Tarik Hayward’s questioning of our contemporary production logics, globalized economy and political systems, as well as a profound interest in craftsmanship and hand labour leads him to his residency in China. He will work on an experimental artist book, created with reprogrammed and modified inkjet printers arrived at the end of their service life. He will research the judgment factors used to evaluate the manufacturing of products: the overall ethics of production, the quality of our output, and our ecological footprint.
