Zhang Ruyi (b. 1985) is an artist currently living and working in Shanghai. She works predominantly in abstract drawing, sculpture and installation. In her practice, sculpture occupies a unique space mediating artefacts, industrial experience and urbanism.
Her artistic practice applies to the logic of life and falls between individual (human being), daily experience (object) and space (any place), communicating the moments of perception when the relationship between an individual and his/her living is inter-directing and limiting; by means of an object turning up at different places, it appears as dependency and intervention. She will look into the local of mode of living, material forms, inhabitant spaces, architectural structures, etc. during the residency by “reading” them, and attempt to test the ideology and humanity of a different place (landscape), so as to try the multiple possibilities beyond those spaces with space already (dwelling, nature, architecture).
Zhang’s work has been presented by Ullens Center For Contemporary Art (Beijing, 2017), Cass Sculpture Foundation (Chichester, 2016), Sifang Art Museum (Nanjing, 2016), chi K11 art museum (Shanghai, 2016), Shanghai 21st Century Minsheng Art Museum (Shanghai, 2015), etc. Her solo exhibitions include “Building Opposite Building” (Don Gallery, Shanghai, 2016), “Pause” (White Space Beijing, Beijing, 2016), “Cut | Off” (Don Gallery, Shanghai, 2014), etc. ZHANG is the recipient of Prix Yishu 8 Chine 2017.
