The quintet ROOFER plays contemporary, liberated jazz music, but always keeps a sublime eye on the tradition of classic jazz. The compositions on the debut album “Prospect” in 2015 all came about in an apartment in Brooklyn NY in 2013 and shine from the first moment on, due to their impressive complexity. They bear witness to great vigor and verve, trickery and groove, passionate improvisation as a collective and mutual swerve through rapid unison parts.
Austere sound collages and wonderfully hypnotic moods, but also fast-paced worlds of swing are experienced here. An exceedingly agile band that performs this balancing act with apparent ease and a playful looseness, without ever seeming arbitrary or accommodating. An open-minded approach is taken here, with unsated curiosity, invention, pleasure in the unforeseeable, and ears wide open. Together with their audience, the five “ROOFER” musicians, all of whom are highly experienced, delight in scaling their musical edifice, so as to enjoy the breathtaking view at a dizzying height.
The quintet was founded by Swiss double-bass player Luca Sisera from Grisons. His companions are Michael Jaeger (tenor sax / clarinet), Silvio Cadotsch (trombone), Yves Theiler (piano) and Michi Stulz (percussion). ROOFER is one of the six recipients of “High Priority Jazz Promotion”, Pro Helvetia’s three-year support program covering the 2017-2019 period.
